About Influenza

Every year, thousands of people suffer from an upper respiratory tract infection known as influenza. Roughly 200,000 people require hospital care, and 36,000 die from complications each year. Many people with symptoms of the flu do not seek a doctor’s care, instead opting for over-the-counter medicines or self-medication. In severe cases of the flu, this is not enough to treat the infection.

Influenza is a viral infection that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. Its symptoms include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, ear pain, and sinus problems. Influenza is contagious, and spreads through virus-infected droplets that are coughed or sneezed into the air. It even has its own season, occurring most commonly between November and April. Many people with the flu usually recover within two weeks of infection, but in some, the infection leads to serious complications like pneumonia.

The flu is caused by two basic types of virus - influenza type A and influenza type B. These viruses are responsible for seasonal flu each year. The evolution of a new flu can lead to influenza pandemic. This occurred most recently in spring of 2009, when the H1N1 virus emerged, infecting a large number of people worldwide.
